  17. <p>    Years ago, as a small child, she became upset when an art
  18. teacher "found my work disagreeable." Now a mature and
  19. accomplished 14, Wang Yani shrugs off criticism and paints as
  20. she pleases -- a favorite subject is the monkey. Last week the
  21. Chinese prodigy, who first put brush to ink at 2 1/2, became
  22. the youngest artist ever to have a solo show at the Smithsonian
  23. Institution. Despite strained U.S.-China relations, she was
  24. permitted to attend the opening in Washington. Perhaps seeking
  25. fresh inspiration, she also took in the Baltimore aquarium and
  26. sampled Popeyes fried chicken.
